Steel siding isn’t a new concept – it’s been around for well over 100 years.

However, there’s been a resurgence in this material among homes over the past few years and steel siding has become a trending product. According to Metal Construction News’ 41st Annual Contractor Survey, metal construction increased by 12.9% in 2021.

As homeowners (especially Millennials) are looking for homes that require low maintenance, it’s no surprise that there’s a positive shift towards steel siding. If you’re considering providing curb appeal for homeowners, then steel siding is certainly the way to go.

Below, we’ll walkthrough the main benefits of steel siding, how it compares to other siding materials and why Klauer is a solid choice to provide you with the siding support your home deserves.

Why Steel Siding?

There’s a reason why steel siding is becoming a popular choice for exterior home building materials in today’s market.

In fact, we can give you four examples why:

  • 1

    Aesthetics

It’s no secret that steel has gorgeous aesthetics. From warm, earthy neutrals to classic white, the steel siding color options are endless for homes. With the right industrial paint system, the finish won’t fade, chalk, chip, or flake like some other types of air-dried or brushed-on paint, so in the unlikely event that a panel needs to be replaced, the color will be easy to match.

  • 2

    Durability

Steel is an extremely resistant and durable material, meaning it provides longevity (a 50-year-minimum life cycle) and doesn’t need to be replaced often. Aside from non-metallic siding products like brick or stone, steel offers the best resistance to hail damage and will outperform other siding products in the harshest of climates. For instance, snow and ice dams won’t damage steel in the long-term; it has the rigidity and strength to withstand high winds; it’s fire-resistant; it’s resistant to mold and fungus; it won’t warp from excessive heat or fading from the sun. Plus, steel can be installed year-round, regardless of where you live.

Fun fact: steel is actually unappealing to rodents, insects and other pets. You can ensure that your customers’ homes can remain bug-free if you utilize steel siding.

    Low Maintenance, Easier Installation

In addition to being aesthetically beautiful, steel siding is rather low maintenance.

First, a skilled steel siding installer can install steel on a home more quickly and efficiently than other siding materials, such as wood or fiber cement. Also, because steel’s lighter and easier to handle the task can be completed by one person.

Second, steel siding results in the lowest required maintenance for the lowest cost. For example, there is no caulking required with steel siding, compared to water absorbing composite products like engineered wood and fiber cement, which needs to be re-caulked every five to seven years. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on re-caulking jobs, homeowners can simply clean the steel siding annually with a garden hose and mild detergent, if necessary. Installing steel siding onto homes clearly saves you both money and time in the long run.

    Environmentally-Friendly

Due to steel’s magnetic properties, it’s the number one recycled material on the globe. The magnetic properties make steel simpler to separate from the solid waste stream, which not only means that it retains its strength in the recycling process, but it results it less waste in the landfills, less energy consumption in production and less overall impact on the environment. At Klauer, we select vendors that utilize recycled steel, because we understand that sustainability is a desirable asset to have in the home. Most of our steel has been recycled at least once and can be recycled over and over and over again.

Furthermore, steel can keep a home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter without increasing energy costs. This means that homeowners can save on long-term energy costs, which ultimately impacts their budget in a positive way.

If you’re looking to reduce the carbon footprint of your home, then sustainable steel ithe primary material to choose.

What are the Differences Between Steel and Other Siding Materials?

Outside of steel siding, the top three other siding materials on the market are vinyl, wood and fiber cement. Even though steel has been shown to be the most durable and sustainable option, it’s important to understand the pros and cons for the other materials. Let’s take a look.

  1. 1

    Vinyl

Vinyl is one of the most affordable siding materials on the market, which is why it’s appealing to many first-time homeowners. However, it’s not the most durable material and needs to be replaced every 10-15 years, since it has a tendency to fade. The latter can outlast and outperform the former, especially since the industrial baked-on paint won’t need to be reapplied every seven years and it isn’t easily prone to cracking and peeling.

  2. 2

    Wood

While wood is an aesthetically-pleasing siding material, it requires a lengthy installation process, since pests like termites and woodpeckers enjoy nibbling on it. Compared to vinyl, wood has a better longevity, but is less durable than steel. Plus, it’s highly prone to mold and rot, so it’s not an ideal material, if you live in rainy climates.

Keep in mind that once wood is treated, it’s no longer considered recyclable. Thus, it becomes a less sustainable option, compared to steel.

  3. 3

    Fiber Cement

Compared to vinyl and wood, fiber cement is durable and doesn’t need to be replaced as often as the previous two materials. However, it requires more maintenance than steel, because it needs to be repainted at least every 15 years. Additionally, fiber cement is challenging to install and if it’s installed incorrectly, then moisture can seep in and cause home damage. Steel has been proven to last longer than fiber cement siding and is a more sustainable solution too. Furthermore, fiber cement needs to be caulked to prevent moisture mitigation, whereas steel siding requires zero caulking. This is because steel siding provides a permanent seal on the structure.
